Getting Back into a Routine

September is probably one of the most difficult months of the year for most people because it is the time when we go back to work or school after our summer holidays. I am normally very excited about it as I see it as an opportunity to have a fresh start, but this does not mean I don’t struggle with it because I do. This year my summer has been absolutely incredible. I have been able to do so many things such as travelling a lot, spending a lot of time with my friends, meeting new people and much more. This means that I have lost most of my habits and now I need to get used to them again, which can be quite challenging sometimes. For this reason, I thought it could be a good idea to give you some tips on how to do that, as I have done quite well this year.

Get organised

This may be the most important thing of all. If you don’t organise what you have to do from the beginning then everything will be chaotic for the rest of the year, especially if you have several demanding activities such as studying, working or blogging. What helps me be more organised is buying a lot of stationary. You will need a new calendar, a new planner, a new diary and anything else that can be useful for you. To do lists are also a great way to know what you need to do and set priorities. Don’t forget that you need to be flexible, otherwise it’s going to be too stressful.

Have fun

I know you have so much stuff to do, but you also need to have fun and relax. If you get organised, as I said before, you can also spend some time doing what you love. You can go out with your friends, go to the cinema or whatever you fancy. The thing is that you can’t be working or studying all day long, you need time to do other things and disconnect. Maybe you can try a new activity such as going to the gym or yoga classes, it may even keep you motivated.

Set yourself goals

I do this all the time. If you have a clear view of what you want to achieve, it will be easier to focus on how to achieve it. These goals can be small or big, it is just self-motivation. For example, one of my biggest dreams is moving to the UK to study and work there, but I need money for that, apart from finishing my degree. Because of this, I work as a teacher in a language school. I enjoy it but I also know it is not the kind of job I want to be doing the rest of my life. However, I am happy with this because it is a way of achieving my biggest goal.


You may think it is a bit silly to include this here, but I think it is important to remind ourselves to get some rest. We are normally very tired when we go back to school or work until we are used to it again, which is why we need to sleep properly. It is also a great way to reduce stress and be more productive. Actually, I’ve recently found out that it affects our emotions and social interactions apart from being linked to depression. If sleeping can improve out mental health then why shouldn’t we do it?

Get used to the situation

Don’t rush! Allow yourself some time to get used to the situation. You may not be happy at first but then you realise you are actually doing what you love. The first two weeks will probably be a nightmare (they were for me) but it’s because you have not settle down just yet. However, I am not saying that you have to feel uncomfortable forever. After a certain time, if you still feel this way, it’s because you probably need a change. You may need to ask yourself why you do what you do and if you want to keep doing it or start something else.

I have tried my best to give you some tips, and I hope you found them useful. However, the process of adaptation is very personal and everyone should find their own way.
